Mobile phone antennas have long been touted as a way to reduce radio noise and air pollution, but there’s now evidence that they could help cut pollution as well.
The BBC’s David Wilkins reports from California that the Barbie mobile phones are a product of the 1950s and 1960s and were meant to replace the traditional radio antenna.
It’s a good idea, says Professor David Wilks.
“I think there’s no question that this kind of technology would be good for reducing emissions of radio pollution,” he said.
‘We’ve got to be realistic’ The Barbie phones have a range of up to 10 metres and they are used by a number of different groups.
The technology has been tested and tested and the Barbies range has always been limited.
However, Professor Wilkins says that with the development of new technologies like solar panels and batteries, “we’ve got a new opportunity to really get this right”.
“We’ve had this very high standard of technology for a very long time and we’ve got this very low standard of radio emission control,” he explained.
Professor Wilkins believes there is a market for Barbies because of the way they are made.
He says the technology is relatively easy to manufacture, which means there’s a large number of people who are likely to be able to afford them.

There’s an estimated 20 million Barbies worldwide, with most of them sold worldwide.

The receiver then amplifies the signals to the same frequency as the transmitter.
This means that when the signal from the receiver is amplified to the transmitter, the transmitter’s signal can be heard.
In the Barbys case, Professor David says that the receiver and transmitter are connected via a small, round plastic cable.
When the barbie phones were developed, Professor Richard Dix at the University of Melbourne in Australia, worked with Barbies that he developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
After his death in 1996, the antenna was developed by Mr Dix.

How do you make a Barbie?
Professor Dix developed a prototype in the 1960s that used a standard Barbie barcode and the transmitter to make the barcodes for mobile phones.

Professor Wilkes believes that there is an emerging market for a Barberry mobile phone.
