The NFL Players Association is notifying players on Wednesday that they will not wear shoes in the locker room after players were arrested at an airport in the United States after their flight from London to the United Kingdom.
The players have been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
The NFL said that players will wear sandals during the league’s bye week, a decision that is being closely watched.
The league did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The incident took place as the NFL and its players’ union had been negotiating a deal for a new collective bargaining agreement.
In an effort to improve relations, players and their union agreed in August to make it easier for the league to release its schedule of regular-season games.
The agreement came after a series of contentious days of negotiations between the league and the union.
Last week, union members said the league did nothing wrong by allowing players to travel with their shoes on in the air.
